I knew this girl once. We hung out a lot. She was attractive, had blonde hair that went to her shoulders, and was surprisingly witty for a female. I had another friend, Craig, who was my other best friend and was my roommate for all of college. We saved up enough money to rent an apartment near the college we all attended. It was nothing special but we fixed it up as best we could and turned it into our own bachelor pad. The girl, Emily, lived on campus but was around our apartment a lot. Emily had a nice roommate but her roommate’s boyfriend was always in their room. The rooms on campus didn’t have a kitchen where she could cook and she would normally come use our kitchen to cook instead of going to the campus cafeteria. It worked out for all of us. She was a good cook that made us dinner every time she used our kitchen and also did the dishes.
We were all juniors in college. I had known Craig since high school and I met Emily the beginning of our sophomore year in college. Craig was the type of guy who would hit on anything that walked but secretly he had a great heart. He wanted to be a grade school teacher. He didn’t tell anyone but he was a mentor in the Big Brother Big Sister program. He would go there in the evenings after school to mentor his “little” Josh. I worked third shift working security and slept in the mornings while most people were in class. I scheduled my classes in the evenings and afternoons and for those that I couldn’t I would sign up for online classes to work around my schedule. I had actually met Emily when I first started my job. We had a morning class that I fell asleep in quite often and would ask her for her notes when I did. At first she thought I was a loser who couldn’t stay awake until one day after class I explained my situation. There was no attendance policy and after we grew closer and hung out a little I stopped going to classes and every other day after class she would stop by and go over what I missed. She was fascinated how I would get better grades on exams based on her notes and the PowerPoint’s posted online. The rest is history as we grew closer and became great friends.
Emily was like a lot of college girls. She partied through her first semester. Dated a “bad boy” her second semester. Her grade point average wasn’t what she wanted her first year at college and decided to rededicate herself her sophomore year. She worked hard her sophomore year and found a lot of her college friends only were her friends because they partied together. That’s when she met Craig and I and became a part of our little crew of people who worked hard, studied smart, and did what we had to do to get by. Originally she was interested in Craig when she started getting close to me but she quickly gave up as she realized he was emotionally unavailable and had his sights set on the future.
We had grown so close that it was common that Emily would sleep on our futon couch and if either of us were playing video games in our underwear she wouldn’t say anything and we didn’t feel bad about it. Emily was interested in this soccer player, Matt, on our schools team. They talked for a while until a friend of mine had told me that Matt was secretly talking to other girls. I told Emily and she knew that I wouldn’t lie to her and quickly stopped talking to him. Over the last three weeks or so Emily has been acting strange. She has been showing up to our place dressing nicer than I’m used to seeing her. I thought about asking her about it but I assumed it was a girl coping mechanism to look pretty as a way to get over a guy who didn’t chose her. I’ll be honest I didn’t mind. Emily had a great body and would wear tight pants and tight shirts. I was use to sweat pants and hoodies. It took me a while but I finally caught a few looks of hers and noticed a few hints that she might be interested in leaving the friend zone.
One evening Emily came by to make some raviolis. I was reading a book and she didn’t say much but she came by me and ran her fingers through my hair and said “hey.” I didn’t know what it was but something in my head just clicked. It was like going from a red light to a green light. It was my sign to go for it. I finished my chapter and watched her in the kitchen as she was stirring up some sauce. She was standing next to the stove top. I walked over behind her and put my hand on her butt. She just stood there and didn’t do anything for about five seconds. She then turned her head and looked at me. Then she put her hand on my crotch and we both stood there for about ten second not saying anything with her hand on my crotch and my hand on her behind. I didn’t know what to say but Emily spoke first. “I like you” is all she said. “I like… whatever this is.” I said feeling stupid after the words came out of my mouth. Emily turned around and moved both her hands to my shoulders and then to my face and leaned in to kiss me. I leaned in as well and we started making out. I’m not sure how long this went on for but it stopped when some hot water from the pan jumped out of the pot and onto my hand that was resting on her hips. I quickly pulled away and said “ouch”. She gave me a confused look and then I pointed to the pot. She stepped away from the stove and looked at me again confused. I wasn’t sure what she was looking for me to say. I shook the hand that the water had scorched and then put it up in the air as if to motion for a high-five. Emily gave me a half confused smile. “What? Is this more of a knuckle tap moment? I get to date my best friend. Who else am I going to celebrate with?” I said. Emily burst into a full on smile and gave me a high-five and then a hug. It was awesome.
