Two days ago on Sunday, January 15th, Ricky Gevais hosted the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards. This marks his third time hosting the Globes and was most certainly his most reserved performance to date. Now, I personally miss the Gervais we have seen at the previous two Golden Globe Award shows. I am not at all attempting to dismiss or belittle the performance Gervais gave this year, in fact I really enjoyed it. I thought he was hilarious but there always seemed to be a leash around his neck. It was very clear that the Hollywood Foreign Press had taken very special care to make sure that Gervais “behaved” himself better this year. The idea became a reality when Gervais himself made a joke about the set of rules given to him when he accepted the hosting position. I’m not blaming Gervais for his controlled performance and I do recognize that a number of people like this year’s performance the best out of the three. The performance still bothered me though.
It’s as simple as buying a gallon of vanilla ice cream, opening it up and expecting it to taste like chocolate. Ricky Gervais has shown us his style of hosting the Golden Globes twice but now for this third installment, the Golden Globes expected him to be something different. If the Hollywood Foreign Press wanted somebody to host the Golden Globes that was a little…less….Gervais then they should have hired somebody that wasn’t Ricky Gervais. I know; that’s quite the crazy idea but I’m just spit balling here. I would like to emphasize that I had no issue with Golden Globes or Ricky Gervais’ performance, I’m just very upset that their plan was to try and control their host. It’s not the way an awards show should work and it is not the way an awards show should treat their hosts. Gervais is known for his insulting, raunchy style of humor. When the Golden Globes made Gervais their host, that is the host they should have expected. If they wanted a different style of hosting then they should have found a different person.
