This week, Community made its triumphant return to NBC’’s Thursday Comedy Night. It only took fifteen minutes for Community to decisively capture this weeks funniest moment of the week. Unlike the past couple funniest moments of the week, this weeks moment is an actual moment. In fact it is a single line said by Annie Edison (Alison Brie) that had me rolling on the ground laughing. If you are a Jim Belushi fan (I know, big if right) I will warn you this might not be your own personal funniest moment of the week. At one point during the episode, Joel McHale’s character Jeff Winger practices giving a speech. The speech beings “Webster’s dictionary defines…” Annie immediately tares the opening apart because “ that’s the Jim Belushi of speech openings. It accomplishes nothing but everybody keeps using it and nobody understands why.” Quotes like these make it obvious why Community is back on Comedy Night. Perfectly placed, clever and most importantly true, this quote easily deserves to win funniest moment of the week.
“Poor Jerry Gergich.” I find myself saying this at least once every Thursday during the premiere of each new episode of Parks and Recs. Not only is Jerry (Jim O’Heir) blamed for everything and the butt of every joke but he has also turned into a pathetic, though quite lovable, character. This week provides yet another insight into Jerry’s pathetic life, making Jerry Gergich the funniest moment of the week.
After having people sleep through his surprise party, accidentally being told that he was adopted and getting (and loving) socks for every birthday and Christmas gift, what more can the show do to Jerry? Why, turn him into a monotonous task robot of course. Deep into helping with Leslie’s campaign, this episode has Donna (Rhetta) and Jerry doing one of the most monotonous tasks possible, stuffing envelopes. Donna attempts to go home at a reasonable hour but when she sees Jerry working, she stays to watch. Jerry, who loves the monotonous work because “it makes sense to” him, stuffs envelopes like a machine. Never pausing, taking a break or stopping, Jerry works through the night without realizing it until Donna finally stops him at four in the morning. Upon stopping, Jerry realizes that he put the wrong fliers in the envelopes (which he has stuffed boxes and boxes worth). With a smile on his face, Jerry grabs a letter opener and starts unstuffing the envelopes. Jerry Gergich: the monotonous task robot and this week’s funniest moment.
